๐Ÿฆ˜ Australian Accent Test: How Good Is Your Australian Accent?

Broad Australian English is relaxed and nasal, with vowels that slide somewhere unexpected and sentences that often lift at the end. It sounds easy-going and quick.

๐ŸŽค Test your Australian now

The line to say

โ€œG'day mate, chuck another snag on the barbie, no worries.โ€

The judge scores how close you sound, whether you keep it up, your commitment, and whether you stick to the line. Up to 10 seconds, free, no sign-up.

How to do a Australian accent

  1. Shift 'ay' towards 'eye': 'mate' becomes 'mite', 'day' becomes 'die'.
  2. Lift the pitch at the end of statements now and then, so they sound almost like questions.
  3. Keep your mouth fairly closed and lazy, letting some sound come through the nose.
  4. Drop the R after vowels ('barbie' is 'bah-bee') and flap middle T's softly.

The most common mistake

Drifting into a Cockney or South African sound by making the vowels too clipped.

Warm up with this

โ€œReckon it'll be a scorcher arvo, grab the sunnies and some cold drinks.โ€
