🎩 How to Do A 1920s Gangster Voice (and Test It)

The 1920s film gangster talks fast and nasally out of the side of the mouth, with clipped words and a tough edge. 'See?' and 'nyeah' are the glue.

The line to say

“Listen here, see, nobody crosses the boss, nyeah, see?”

How to do it

  1. Talk out of one corner of your mouth, lips barely moving, to get the nasal snarl.
  2. Rattle through the words quickly, then hit 'see?' sharply at the end.
  3. Turn 'th' into 'd' and drop R's after vowels: 'dese guys', 'da boss', 'heah'.
  4. Pop in a short nasal 'nyeah' between phrases, like a sneer you can hear.

The most common mistake

Slowing down to sound menacing; this one is all about quick, cocky patter.

Warm up with this

“You got a lotta nerve comin' round here, wise guy, now scram, see?”
